BGL Monthly September 2008
BGL News
From the Managing Director
There has been a lot of activity at BGL over the past 2 months.
In July 2008, BGL released Simple Fund Version 11.1. This release includes the new SMSF 2008 Annual Return as well as all the other paper and electronic forms required by clients to complete their 2008 superannuation work. At the same time, BGL released its new Unlisted Unit Trust (UUT) data service. This service has been added to our highly successful ASX data service. Together, these services now provide cost effective appropriately licensed data to over 1,000 BGL clients. Should you wish to avail yourself of these services, you can subscribe through the
BGL Client Centre
In August, BGL also released CAS Ver 11.1 which included over 50 new features and new electronic forms available from ASIC. BGL expects these new forms to be available for clients to lodge in the next few days once ASIC updates its systems to accept lodgement.
At the same time, BGL has been working on our
2008 Product Roadmap . The Roadmap includes the release of the BGL Report Editor in the next few weeks followed by the new CAS Forms Module and the BGL Query Module in October 2008. CAS Forms will allow clients to prepare virtually any form through CAS. BGL Query will be available for all products and will allow clients to easily prepare sophisticated database queries in CAS, Simple Fund, Simple Invest and Simple Ledger. More information and pricing for these modules is outlined elsewhere in this newsletter.
In August, BGL held product update seminars. Over 1,000 clients attended to check out the new features in latest releases of CAS and Simple Fund and also to get a preview of the new BGL Report Editor.
The past few weeks have also been very busy for the BGL Support Team. As you can understand, with the release of so much new software and the update for many clients to the new Nexus database for the first time, support has been inundated with client calls. We ask clients to be patient during this busy period. We also ask clients installing updates with the new database ie updating from CAS Ver10.x to Ver 11.x or Simple Fund Ver 10.x to Ver 11.x, ensure they read the installation instructions and the on screen messages as installing these updates is different from installing previous BGL: software. I also strongly suggest clients who operate their BGL applications on a computer network and do not have experience installing client / server applications consider employing an IT professional to install these updates.
Over the next few weeks some of the BGL Management Team will be attending the
World Business Forum in New York City. This annual event includes in its speaker list many world business and political leaders. Members of the BGL management team attend this event every 2 years to gain a first hand insight into the latest business and management strategies. I would highly recommend this event to BGL clients.
You may have noticed there was no BGL Client Newsletter in July 2008. BGL has decided to change the frequency of our newsletter to bimonthly and use BGL Direct and email where we need to inform clients of important matters during the intervening period.
We look forward to providing you with a number of exciting new products and services over the next 12 months.

CAS
CAS Version 11.1 and CASNet 6.0 are currently available on our web site. To download the latest update, please log in to the
BGL Client Centre.
CAS Version 11.1 added numerous new features, enhancements and tools, to provide our clients with an even more efficient and effective compliance solution.
The CAS product manager would like to recognise the effort of the entire CAS team for their outstanding and unwavering determination and hard work to provide CAS Version 11.1 in August.
We would like to thank our clients that have helped with the Beta testing of CAS for the version 11.1 release. The CAS Beta testers provided outstanding and invaluable feedback during the testing phase of this release and we are sure that all users appreciate their hard work.
CAS Version 11.1 is possibly the most feature packed release in the long history of the CAS product. The additional features and enhancements have arrived with some issues but the persistence of the CAS team and the feedback from clients has enabled the continuing development and improvement in CAS. The feedback from clients helps us to maintain focus on the functions regularly used by our clients.
The success of the CAS update seminars and the feedback it provided is invaluable. The seminars showed how clients and users appreciate and recognise the number of their requests and wish list items that have been added to the system.
The CAS team will continue to constantly strive to provide a software package that is written purely for the benefit of our clients with as much input as possible from its users.
CAS Version 11.1 has allowed for an update of our report engine to Quick Reports 5.0 which has now also enabled CAS and all BGL products to provide a full featured report editor.
The full suite of CAS reports are able to be re-designed and altered by users of CAS. The report designs are able to be changed at the time of preparation where users also have the option to replace the existing report template that CAS currently provides, with your latest redesigned report.
This feature allows users to alter colours, fonts, styles, company logo's, signing lines, database fields, spacing, columns, shadings and so much more in all CAS reports.
The BGL product teams have commenced developing a feature packed Query module. This module will enable CAS clients to query the CAS database in plain English and provide an output in a customisable form.
This will mean that CAS users and users of any BGL products will be able to create, modify and reproduce reports that provide the exact information that is required in the most appropriate format designed by you, the user.
These changes enable clients to get even greater value out of the CAS product and therefore greater value for your business.
BGL and the CAS team would like to welcome our new senior programmer, Prakash Sastry.
Prakash has been a senior programmer for many years, working on numerus systems and brings a great deal experience related to Nexus, our database engine.
Important Note
Please note that CAS version 11.1 includes the latest electronic forms allowed by ASIC. these are the form 6010, 201, 205's and 410's.
CAS users are able to pay for these forms by using their Direct Debit ASIC account or ASIC can invoice direct to the company whom the forms are lodged
Please note the following if documents are lodged electronically and for ASIC to directly invoice the company (i.e. not to use the agents direct debit account):
- ASIC will not send an invoice to you the agent - only the company will
receive a paper invoice (if the asic direct debit account is used, an
electronic invoice is received through the cas software).
- If the account is not paid on time, the transaction is reversed.
With reference to a 410, this will mean that the company name is no
longer reserved or with relation to the 6010, the company will not be
deregistered.
CAS Tip
Form 6010 can now be lodged electronically through CAS .
The form 6010 is created through the CAS Process Tree | Corporate Registers | Other Documents | Deregistration/Dissolutions
The application for deregistration may be made by the company; a director or member of the company; or a liquidator of the company.
If the company is the applicant, then a person must be nominated to receive the notice of deregistration. This is done by attaching a representative to the company in the peoples list.
The signature for the form must be the applicant
Once the form has been created, it is then available to be selected, in your lodgement screen.
Please note – for electronic lodgment, only the Company or a Director/Alternate Director can be the applicant.
Simple Fund
Better Super formerly known as Super Simplification has resulted in the most significant changes to Simple Fund ever. BGL has made the transition as simple for clients as possible. We do understand that you will have a lot of questions about the changes but we ask that you first perform the following three tasks before logging a support call.
Firstly make sure you are running the latest version of Simple Fund. The ATO are continuing to fix errors with the SMSF Annual Return and MCS form specifications and each specification change requires BGL to update the Simple Fund software. It is therefore critical that you are running the latest versions of Simple Fund. In Simple Fund go to Administration | Defaults | task Help screen and ensure the check box “Software Update Notification” is selected. This way you will receive a message as soon as an update is available.
Secondly download the Simplification Guide (21/08/2008) from the BGL Client Centre and ensure everyone who uses Simple Fund in the office has a read through the guide. This handy guide has been prepared by BGL Corporate Solutions Pty Ltd for Simple Fund clients and has been designed to give you a brief description of changes to the relevant sections of legislation and the changes made to Simple Fund in Version 11.1.
Thirdly check the FAQ Knowledge base. Support is receiving a high number of calls that can be easily resolved by clients reading the Knowledge base before logging a call. The knowledge base is constantly being updated for any Simplification questions being posed by clients.
The following is a list of Simplification related Articles currently available from the Knowledge Base:
Article 456: Crystallisation of member components as at 01/07/2007
Article 458: Proportioning Rule
Article 459: Recording pension payments with the new proportioning rule for the 2007/2008 year and later
Article 460: How to process transition to retirement pensions.
Tip of the Month
V17 Mandatory Tag :Date Audit completed Missing. Question 6 - Date Audit was completed on the SMSF Annual Return is a new question for 2008 that all funds must complete.
Under a new regulation that took effect late last year, trustees must appoint an auditor at least 30 days before the due date for the return. Simple Fund will use the Audit Report Date in the Financial Reports | Audit Report screen to populate Question 6 - Date Audit was completed on the SMSF Annual Return. So please ensure you go to the Audit Report screen and input a valid date before you prepare the SMSF Annual Return.
Simple Invest
Please review the full installation instructions available from the BGL Client Centre before running this update.
Clients who have not updated to 6.0 previously, please note the following Important Information :
Simple Invest is required to be run from the server with a user account with administration rights to the server
You can not run this update from a workstation connected to the serve
You can not install this update with a limited user account if you are running a standalone (single user non networked PC
Nexus strongly recommends that you setup the database files on the same local drive where the database is to be installed

ASX and Unlisted Unit Trust (UUT) data directly into your Simple Fund, Simple Invest and Simple Ledger software.
There is a number of new features and fixes available in the latest update.
We have changed the user interface and we have added a new icon to bring them in line with the user interface changes from the previous release.
The Account Ledger report will now display Asset Purchase transactions that has units but no amounts entered.
A new warning message will appear when processing a disposal of an investment that is not subject to CGT and the narrations field for disposal entries in the transaction screens will now show the whole narration even for the extremely long investment account names.
Bendigo Bank Internet Banking CSV formatted transactions has been added to our transactions upload list increasing the list to 13 diverse data sources.
We have also improved Nexus Database connection to remove the reliance on SINVEST.INI file for database connections. This change will prevent conflicts between SINVEST.INI and the NXSERVER.INI database locations.
The BackupRestore process accessed from the Administration process has been improved with several new features.
We have corrected an error message when editing people, a specific issue where certain disposals were not picked up in some reports has been corrected.
The issue with Data Import Rules "A register has not been selected" has been resolved and an issue where transactions were being duplicated when changing account code has been fixed. We also corrected issue with the Dividend/Distribution Comparison Report producing a blank report and register securities screen speed has been improved.
Simple Invest will no longer be able to share the market values database with any other BGL application. Due to requirements imposed by the security prices data provider Morningstar Research Pty Ltd, this update will ensure the market values are not shared and it will automatically split the relevant data files if required.
For those who use BGL ASX and Managed Fund data it would not make any difference as the upload is fully automated and does not require any user interference.

Tip of the Month
Did you know that Simple Ledger provides a comprehensive depreciation calculator. It provides the ability to maintain all your depreciable assets requirements within Simple Ledger and provides a depreciation schedule together with the ability to post depreciation journals to the selected ledger.
Users also have the ability to select either the Tax Depreciation or Accounting Depreciation rate for Simple Ledger to use in the calculation of the Deprecation Schedule.
Simple Ledger users need to input the Tax, Accounting and/or Private Use depreciation rate(s) % and select a depreciation method in the Chart of Accounts Add/Edit screen. Simple Ledger will then use these rates together with the selected depreciation method to calculate the depreciation schedule which can then be previewed or printed. The depreciation schedule provides for the following ATO depreciation methods: Prime Cost, Diminishing Value , Motor Vehicle Prime Cost, Motor Vehicle Diminishing Value, Low Value Pool, General STS Pool and Long-Life STS Pool.
